Comenzó grabando un disco electrónico y ambiental a los dieciséis años. Ese disco cayó en manos de un director del Canal 4 de la BBC que le propuso componer la música para un documental televisivo que estaba rodando. Pemberton aceptó y compuso la banda sonora cuando todavía estaba en el instituto alternando este trabajo con sus deberes de clase. Aquel fue el inició de una carrera en televisión que en los últimos años le ha llevado a trabajar en más de 500 producciones. Debutó en la gran pantalla con el largometraje Mob Law (1998), dirigido por Paul Wilmshurst.
