Estudió teoría y composición en el Conservatorio de Cincinnati con Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Tras tocar la trompeta en una serie de bandas, en 1939 trabajó como director musical del programa de radio de la NBC de Kay Kyser, Kollege of Musical Knowledge, y durante la II Guerra Mundial sirvió como director de orquesta y arreglista en la Radio de las Fuerzas Armadas. Después de la guerra, Duning firmó con Columbia Pictures, componiendo la primera de sus cinco nominaciones a los Premios de la Academia, el musical biográfico, Jolson Sings Again (1949). Fue también nominado por el drama, Amarga sombra (No Sad Songs for Me, 1950), la película romántica y bélica De aquí a la eternidad (From Here to Eternity, 1953) adaptación de Fred Zinnemann del libro de James Jones, el drama romántico, Picnic (1955) y el drama biográfico, The Eddy Duchin Story (1956), pero no logró el premio en ninguna de esas cinco ocasiones.
