Biografía:

Compositor francés, especialmente conocido por sus bandas sonoras para el cine. Nacido en Lyon, fue alumno de Aubert y Passerone en el Conservatorio de París, destacando pronto en la percusión. En 1951 sería nombrado director de la música del Teatro Nacional Popular de París, para el que escribiría numerosas músicas de escena hasta 1963. Estas composiciones, un tanto anodinas, respondían plenamente a la función ilustrativa que el texto les tenía asignadas, y que de algún modo anticiparían futuros logros del compositor en la música cinematográfica; en ellas la influencia de Arthur Honegger es notoria. En cualquier caso, lo más destacado de la producción musical de Jarre se circunscribe a sus ballets: “Armida” (1954), “Fácheuse rencontre” (1958) y “Notre Dame de París” (1966), su obra maestra; partituras hoy olvidadas pero que en su tiempo situaron a su autor entre los músicos franceses más reputados de la escena. Entre medias, merecen destacarse piezas instrumentales como “Pasacalle a la memoria de A. Honegger” (1956), en homenaje al gran compositor suizo, fallecido en 1955; “Polyphonies concertantes” (1959), para piano, percusión, trompeta y orquesta; así como la comedia musical “Loin de Rueil” (1961). En 1962, Jarre se haría acreedor del Premio de la SIMC, y al año siguiente alcanzaría su consolidación mundial con el Óscar de Hollywood ganado por la partitura del film “Lawrence de Arabia”, de David Lean, película que orientaría de manera definitiva su futura carrera en el medio cinematográfico, para el que escribiría la música de más de ciento cincuenta películas, una nueva etapa que se prolongaría hasta el final de su carrera y que, aunque mucho más popular que la primera, es musicalmente inferior. El éxito de sus temas para la película “Doctor Zhivago” (1965), segunda colaboración con David Lean y segundo premio Óscar, mediatizaría su firma hasta el punto de convertirse en su trabajo musical más duradero, al menos popularmente, gracias a sus melodías azucaradas y al empleo asumidamente kitsch de la música rusa. Desde entonces Jarre amasaría una fortuna trabajando para la industria cinematográfica. El último año de su vida, el Festival de Cine de Berlín le concedió un Oso de Oro honorífico por toda su carrera. © José Antonio Bielsa
