Considerado uno de los más influyentes músicos de Hollywood, llegó al mundo del cine tras unos comienzos absolutamente rocambolescos. Como era hijo de emigrantes polacos y dominaba la lengua de sus progenitores, éstos decidieron enviarlo a Europa, pensando en su temprana educación musical. Estudió en el Conservatorio de Varsovia y pronto acreditó grandes dotes musicales, sorprendiendo a sus profesores, quienes son testigos de una fulgurante carrera que le lleva en plena adolescencia a ser el primer violín de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Varsovia. Hasta ese momento, su trayectoria no sufrió contratiempo alguno, pero en 1917, acepta realizar una gira de conciertos en Rusia, en plena euforia revolucionaria. Las garantías de seguridad son mínimas y, de hecho, es arrestado. Todo hace temer por su integridad personal cuando un oficial bolchevique, admirado de su talento, planea la huida de Young, quien parece tocado por la mala suerte, pues al poco de burlar a las autoridades rusas, vuelve a ser arrestado, esta vez a Alemania, país donde su presencia tampoco parece oportuna. De nuevo es su talento como violinista el salvoconducto que le sirve para salir de prisión, rumbo a Estados Unidos. Tras el ajetreado periplo europeo, Young decide instalarse en Los Ángeles, donde gana fama como violinista. Atraído por el mundo del cine, prueba suerte en la orquesta que la Paramount tiene en plantilla para interpretar las bandas sonoras de sus producciones. Para sorpresa de todos, Young empieza a componer y arreglar partituras, y lo hace con tal facilidad, que habrá de pasar a la historia del cine como uno de los músicos más prolíficos. En su currículum profesional figuran alrededor de trescientas cincuenta composiciones y arreglos. Quien más se sirve de su habilidad musical es el director Cecil B. De Mille, para el que Young compondrá bandas sonoras inolvidables, como las de Policía Montada del Canadá (1940) y Sansón y Dalila (1949). No obstante, Victor Young es más conocido por ser el autor de varias melodías de western sin las cuales resulta difícil explicar las convenciones musicales del género, Río Grande (1950), Raíces profundas (1953) y Johnny Guitar (1954), entre otras.
